The frustration this caused gamers was made all the worse by the fact Sony announced they were going to keep everyone waiting until June 27 to issue a fix.
Well, it’s now the 27th and Sony has indeed released a new firmware that solves the issues 4.45 introduced.
For further official news on the subject from Sony, please keep an eye on this thread: [System Software Update] PS3 v.4.45 - SCEA Update Slim 160 GB user here. It might not be affecting most people, I'm not sure of the facts yet, but I'll play it safe.
For those stuck with the faulty PS3 update Tomorrow a patch should come out to fix this.
That's really the ONLY reason they have to continue any kind of support for a machine that's pretty much phased out at this point. I'm against Sony claiming said update is to "improve system performance".

If you succeeded in activating Safe Mode, you will see a message on the screen saying, "Connect the controller using a USB cable and then press the PS button." Sony has come out to acknowledge the issues with this firmware update. Downloaded the update probably 4 hours ago, have used Netflix, a disc based game, and a PS downloaded game with no problems. Would have sucked to have my system automatically update and screw up.
